This Infant jacket and bonnet is made in a patterned stitch which is made in a patterned stitch which is very easy to do. There is a front band made up of seed of stitches that gives an interesting touch to the completed jacket. The bonnet has a knit ruffle that circles the baby’s face. The model was made from Coats & Clarks’s Red Heart Baby Wool, 3 ply, 4 one-ounce skeins of pink or other desired color. You will need one pair each of number 1 and 2 knitting needles and five buttons.

Gauge: 8 sts make 1 inch

11 rows make 1 inch

Blocking measurements: Width across back at underarm – 10 inches.

Width across each front at underarm – 6 inches.

Length from shoulder to lower edge – 10 inches

Jacket – Back: Starting at lower edge with number 1 knitting needles, cast on 80 sts. Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1 for 1 inch, increasing 1 st at the end of the last row. Change to number 2 knitting needles and work in pattern as follows:

Rows 1 and 3: K across.

Rows 2 and 4: P across.

Row 5: P 1, * sl 1 as if to p, k next 2 sts, psso, p 1, repeat from * across.

Row 6: K 1, * p 1, O p 1, k 1, repeat from * across.

Row 7: Repeat 5th row.

Row 8: P 2, * pick up and p a sr from row below, p 3, repeat from * across ending with p 2 (instead of p 3). Rows 1 through 8 inclusive constitute the pattern. Work in pattern until piece measures 6 inches in all, ending with a p row.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 4 sts at the beginning of next 2 rows, dec 1 st at both ends  of every other row, until 65 sts remain. Work in pattern without decreasing until piece measures 4 inches from first row of armhole shaping. Ending with a p row.

To Shape Shoulders: Bind off 11 sts at the beginning of the next 4 rows. Bind off remaining 21 sts for the back of neck.

Left front: Starting at lower edge with number 1 knitting needles, cast on 48 sts.

Row 1: * K 1, p 1, repeat from * across.

Row 2: P 1, (k 1, p 1) 3 times (front band), * p 1, k 1 , repeat from * across, ending with p 1.

Repeat last 2 rows alternately for 1 inch, ending with second row. Change to number 2 knitting needles and work as follows.

Row 1: K across to last 7 sts, ( p 1, k 1 ) 3 times, p 1.

Row 2: P 1, ( k 1, p 1 ) 3 times, p across. Keeping the 7 sts of front band as established ( seed st ), work in pattern as fro back until piece.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 4 sts at beginning of next row. Dec 1 st at armhole edge every other row until 40 sts remain. Work without decreasing until piece measures 2 ½ inches from first row of armhole shaping, ending at front edge.

To shape neck: Bind off 15 sts at beginning of next row. Dec 1 st at neck edge every other row until 22 sts remain. Work without decreasing until piece measures same as back from first row of armhole shaping, ending at armhole edge.
