The Combination of colors in this rug gives a very different and unusual braided effect. The rug shown is 33 inches in diameter but could be increased to any desired size. Lily Mills Cotton Rug Yarn and Carpet Warp were used in making the model. With the carpet warp, your crochet over a 6-strand twisted cord of rug yarn. You need 3 (80 yards in each skein) skeins of dark blue, 2 skeins each of light blue and delft blue, 1 skein each of flamingo, cream and salmon rose cotton rug yarn; 2 ½ tubes (400 yards on one tube) carpet warp and number 7 steel crochet hook. For best results, you must work tightly.

Gauge: 11 rows equal 3 inches.

Abbreviations:

  • Ch (chain)
  • Sl st (slip stitch)
  • Sc ( single crochet )
  • Rnd (round)
  • Sp (space)
  • Inc (increase)
  • Lp (loop)
  • Sk (skip)

Center: Starting in center with carpet warp, ch 5, join with sl st to form ring. Ch 1, 12 sc in ring, join to first sc. Wind 1 skein of each color of rug yarn into a ball. Holding the end from each ball together, for a 6-strand cord, place balls in a box, then pull out a long length of each ball evenly (across a room or two) and a twist fairly tight.

Rnd 1: Draw out lp on hook to ¼ inch length. Place end of cord between lp and thread, draw thread through lp and tighten st around cord. (Ch 2, sc around cord in next sc) 11 times. Mark end of each rnd. Do not join rnds.

Rnd 2: Ch 2, (sc, ch 2, sc) pver cord in first ch-2 sp (inc), working over cord at all times, * ch 2, sc in next sp, ch 2 (sc, ch 2, sc ) in next sp. Repeat from * around (6 incs to make 18 sps)

Rnd 3: Ch 2, sc in next sp, * ch 2, ( sc , ch 2, sc ) in next sp (an inc), ( ch 2, sc in next sp ) twice. Repeat from * around (6 incs to make 24 sps ).

Rnd 4: Inc in every 4th sp ( 6 inc – 30 sps).

Rnd 5: Inc in every 5th sp ( 6 incs – 36 sps). Place incs between  or to one side of incs in previous rnd.

Continue through 18th cord and (10 inches across circle). When additional cord length is needed, fold rug with carpet warp tube inside it, and with yarn balls in a box, pull out another long length of cord. Turn folded rug around until cord is well twisted. Repeat as needed. * To finish off cord, drop 2 strands of cord to back of work, ch 2, sc over remaining 4 strands of cord in next sp, drop 2 more strands at back, ch 2, sc remaining  2 strands in next sp, drop final 2 strands of cord, * sl st in next sc, sl st in next sp. Cut cord ends ¾- inch long.

Rnd 19: Wind 6 balls of dark blue.

Hold ends together for a cord and starting as in rnd 1, make 3 rnds, 6 incs in each rnd. Finish off dark blue cord as for previous cord. To keep incs evenly spaced, make an inc in 5th sp to right of each inc in previous rnd. If necessary to keep work flat make an occasional rnd even without incs.

Rnd 22: With delft blue, measure around circle, plus 5 inches, fold back and forth on this length for 6 strands and cut. Sl st in next sc through 3-lp end of cord, sl st in next sp (under cord), draw up lp and make st around cord, then make one rnd with 6 incs. At end, ch 2, drop cord on back and join with sl st. Cut cord ¾-inch long. Continue in same way with one rnd each light blue, cream and salmon rose; 2 rnds flamingo, one rnd each salmon rose cream, light blued and delft; and 3 rnds dark blues. Now twist another long cord of 6 colors (as for center) and make 14 rnds. Finish rug with one rnd light blue (to measure 31 inches across). Finish off dark blue cord as from *to* at end of center. Sc in next sc, drop cord but do not cut.

Edge ( 2 sc in next sp, sc in next sc, ch 17, sk 4 sps, sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sp, sc in next sc) repeated around, join to first sc.

Rnd 2: Draw up dark blue cord and make a st around it, * ch 2, sc over cord in third st of next ch 17 lp, (ch 2, sk 1 ch, sc over cord in next ch ) 6 times, ch 2, sc over cord in center sc between lps. Repeat from * around, join, fasten off and cut cord.

Working on back, sew ends of cords down flat, securely. Stretch and pin rug right-side-down on a large, padded board or table. Steam and press dry through a doubled cloth.
