Baby Sweater and Bonnet

To make the set you will need 2 ounces of white baby yarn, 1 ounce of contrasting baby yarn, standard knitting needles sizes 2 and 4 and 2 stitch holders.

Abbreviations:

  • K (knit)
  • P (purl)
  • O (yarn over)
  • St (stitch)
  • Tog (together)
Sweater: Start at neck edge with contrast color and using size 2 needles, cast on 62 sts.

Row 1 through 3: K each st.

Row 4: Change to white yarn. K 14, O, (k 1, O) 3 times, k 28, O, (k 1, O) 3 times, k 14.

Row 5: P each st. All remaining uneven rows to next change of color are worked in same manner.

Row 6: K 15, O, k 1, O, k 3, O, k 1, O, k 30, O, k 1, O, k 3, O, k 1, O, k 15.

Row 8: K 16, O, k 1, O, k 5, O, k 1, O, k 32, O, k 1, O, k 5, O, k 1, O, k 16. Continue increasing k sts as in rows 6 and 8 until there are 246 sts on needle.

The last row will have k 36, O, k 1, O, k 45, O, k 1, O, k 72, O, k 1, O, k 45, O, k 1, O, k 36

With contrast color, k 37, place next 49 sts on a st holfer for sleeve, k 74, place next 49 sts on a st holder for other sleeve, k 37.

K each of next 5 rows.

With white yarn, use size 4 needles and work in pattern for 30 rows.

Pattern- Row 1: Insert needle into first st as to k, yarn over needle twice and pull back through st in same manner as for plain k st. Repeat in each st across. This forms a loose st when next row is worked.

Row 2: P first st on needle, allow next st to drop from needle thus completing the loose st started in row 1. Repeat across row.

Repeat these two rows 28 times.

With contrast color, k 8 rows very loosely. Bind off very loosely.

Sleeve: With white and size 2 needeles, pick up 49 sleeve sts. K even in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) for 4 inches.

With contrast color, k each of next 4 rows.

With white, k three rows in pattern st.

Now, with contrast color, p each st as for row 2 pattern.

Next row: * P 4, p 2 tog, repeat from * across, ending with p 2.

Next row: * P 4, p 2 tog, repeat from * across. Bind off.

Work other sleeve in same manner.

Finishing: With right side of work toward you, use contrast color, pick up and k 72 sts on right front edge. K three rows. Bind off.

With right side of k work toward you, pick up and k 72 sts on left front edge. K one row.

Next row: The buttonholes are formed in this row. K 2, O, k 2 tog, ( k12, O, k 2 tog ) twice, k remaining sts.

Next row: K each st. Bind off.

Bonnet: With white yarn and size 2 needles cast 9 sts.

Row 1: * K 1, O, repeat from *, rnd with k 1.

Row 2 and all even rows to change of color: P each st.

Row 3: * K 2, O, repeat from *, end with k 1.

Row 5: * K 3, O, repeat from *, end with k 1.

Continue in this manner, increasing the sts between O’s until the row in which there are 11 k sts between each O, end with k 1.

Next row: P each st.

With contrast color, k each of next four rows.

With white, k three rows in pattern st.

With contrast color, p each of next four rows.

With white, p one row. Bind off 4 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Work in stockinette st for 3 inches, end with a p row.

With contrast color, k each of next 8 rows. Bind off. Join back seam.

With contrast color and with right side toward you, pick up and k 60 sts along lower ( neck ) edge of boonet. K three rows. Bind off. Sew ribbon at fron corners.
