Tubular Wool jersey is an ideal fabric for a stole because it drapes beautifully and clings to shoulder, eliminating the need to read just constantly. Tubular jersey is available in most fabric departments in stores or you may use 54-inch wool jersey, joining selvage edges in a seam before starting on fringe.

You will need 2 yards of tubular wool jersey for a tall size, 1 ¾ yards for average size and 1 2/3 for the short size. A large skein of wool yarn in matching or contrasting colour is required and a number 2 steel crochet hook which may have upper 2 inches of handle bent to a right angle to form a handle, as shown in sketch, for greater ease in punching through material.
Turn ( to inside ) under ½ inch for a hem on both ends of material, and pin through both thicknesses. Cut skein of yarn in half, thus making pieces of yarn approximately 24 inches long.

Fasten yarn loops ½ inch in from size edge and ½ inch up from lower edge, insert hook through both thicknesses, and pick up 3 strands of yarn ( at center fold of yarn ) and pull through at right side as shown in Fig 1. Bring the 6 ends of yarn through from back to front ( Fig. 2 ).

Now pull yarn tight enough to make firm but not tight enough to cause material to wrinkle. * Leave about 5/8 inch and insert hook in material again, tie in place as before. Repeat from * across. Remove the pins from material as the yarn loops are fastened across row. You are now ready to tie the first row of knots.

Row 1: Start at right sire, pick up the 3 strands of yarn at left of first 6 strands, then pick up 3 strands at right of next group of 6 strands, tie a knot ( Fig. 3 ) be sure knot is ½ inch from edge of stole. Pick up 3 strands from last group of 6 strands and first 3 strands from next group of 6 strands and tie knot. ‘

Continue across in same manner.

Row 2: Start at right side, pick up first 6 strands and tie knot ½ inch below first row of knots. ( Fig. 4 ).

Pick up next 6 strands and tie knot as before. Continue across.

Continue alternating rows 1 and 2 until there are 3 rows of knots.

After last row of knots has been completed and pulled tight, the fringe should be straightened out flat and clipped evenly with sharp scissors.

Be sure to work opposite end in same manner and have side for right side because there is a slight difference in appearance of knots on right and wrong side.
