Here’s an amusing lobster claw mitt, a perfect gift for the man of the house who’ll be presiding at family barbecues. Make this practical mitt in a shade of watermelon, then trim with rose colored rick rack. You will need 2 balls of watermelon Coats & Clarks’ O.N.T. SPEED-CRO-SHEEN Mercerized Crochet Cotton, dark rose medium size rick rack, 1/8 yard white felt for lining and a number 00 steel crochet hook. Abbreviations:

Ch ( chain )                                         inc ( increase )
St ( stitch )                                           dec ( decrease )
Sc ( single crochet )                         lp ( loop )
Sl st ( slip stitch )                               sk ( skip )

  • Gauge: 5 sc equal 1 inch
  • 5 rows equal 1 inch.
  • Hand: Starting at wrist edge, ch
Row 1: Sc in second ch st from hook, sc in each remaining ch st. ( 42 sc )

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, * sc in back lp next of sc, sc in front lp next sc, repeat from * across.

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, * sc in front lp next sc, sc in back lp of next sc, repeat from * across. The last two rows form a moss pattern. Repeat rows 2 and 3 until piece measures 2 inches, ending with row 3.

Next row: This row begins the shaping for little finger edge. Work in pattern across first 20 sc, inc 1 sc, ( to inc 1 sc: make sc in back lp of next sc, sc in front lp same sc ), inc 1 sc in next sc, work in pattern across last 20 sc.

Next row: Ch 1, turn, work in pattern across row.

Next Row: Ch 1, turn, work in pattern across first 21 sc, inc 1 sc in each of next 2 sc, work in pattern across remaining sts.

Continue working an inc in 2 center sts every other row 3 more times. ( 52 sc ) Now work without inc until piece measures 8 inches in all, ending with row 3 pattern.

Next Row: Shaping for tip begins in this row. Ch 1, turn, work in pattern across first 24 sc, dec 1 sc ( to dec 1 sc: pull up a lp in back lp of next sc, thread over and draw through all 3 lps on hook ), dec 1 sc over next 2 sc, work in pattern across remaining sts. Work 7 rows in pattern, making 2 dec sc at center of every row.  After completing the 7th row there will be 36 sc. On each of the hext 4 rows, inc 1 sc in pattern at each end of row and dec at center ( 28 sc remain ). Fasten off.

Thumb: Starting at inner edge, ch 14 tightly.

Row 1: Sc in second ch st from hook. * sc in next ch st, sc in next st, repeat from * across. ( 19 sc ).

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, work in pattern as for hand.

Row 3: Working in pattern, dec 1 sc at beginning of row ( tip ) and inc 1 sc at end of row ( base ).

Rows 4, 5, 6: Ch 1, turn, continue in pattern working inc 1 sc at base and dec 1 sc at tip.

Row 7: Ch 1, turn, sk first sc, dec 1 sc, work in pattern across to last sc, inc 1 sc.

Row 8: Ch 1 turn, inc 1 sc in first sc, work in pattern to within last 3 sc, dec 1, do not work in last sc.

Row 9: Ch 1, turn, sk 1sc, sl st in next sc, dec 1 sc, work in pattern across, inc 1 sc in last sc.

Row 10: Ch 1, turn, inc 1 sc in first sc, work in pattern to within last 4 sc, dec 1 sc, do not work in last 2 sc.

Row 11: Ch 1, turn, sk first sc, sl st in next 2 sc, dec 1 sc, work in pattern, inc 1 sc in last sc.

Row 12: Ch 1, turn, inc 1 sc in first sc, work in pattern across next 3 sc, dec 1 sc. Fasten off. Make a second thumb in same manner.

Block pieces. Line palm side of hand and both thumb pieces with white felt. Sew thumb pieces together along outer edges, leaving base ( inc edge ) and inner edge ( starting ch ) open.

Sew lower edge of hand together for 2 inches. Sew base of thumb between edges of hand. Inserting rick rack between edges, sew inner edge of thumb between thumb and tip.
